NYACK, NY — Monday, May 31 is Memorial Day. In observance of the holiday, most federal, state and local government offices are closed.

There will be no mail delivery. Many businesses are open but with different hours — so it's not a bad idea to check before heading out.

  • Sunday - Raymond W. DeMeola VFW Memorial Post 1615 / Veterans Walkway of Hero's Memorial Day Observance at 10 a.m. / Independence Avenue and Lester Drive, Tappan.
  • Monday - John M. Perry Post 1044 American Legion of Palisades/Sparkill Memorial Day Services / 9 a.m., the Palisades Ceremony to be held at the flag pole / War Monument in Triangle Square, intersection of Closter Road and Rte. 9W / AND, at 11:30 a.m., Parade and Ceremony in Sparkill, starting at the Sparkill Firehouse, route runs north on Rte. 340, turns left (west) onto Union Street, then left again onto Washington Street and ending at the Depot Square Town Park for the Memorial Day Ceremony at approximately 11:50 a.m.
  • Monday - Piermont Engine Hose Co #1 - 10 AM Parade starts in front of VFW Post 7452 of Piermont to Kennedy Park for a Memorial Day Ceremony.
  • Monday - Carl A. Schelin Post 1271 American Legion, Tappan - 10 AM Memorial Service and Wreath Laying at the Tappan Triangle.
  • Monday - Pearl River American Legion John H. Secor Post 329 to host the Annual Memorial Day Parade - The Parade will go on at 10:15 AM from Key Bank. Contingents will line up in the Dollar Store parking lot on North Middletown Road. The parade route then heads south to East Central Avenue and then down Central Avenue to Braunsdorf Park by the Police Booth for the Memorial Day Service at 10:45 AM.
  • Monday - Charles and Raymond O. Blauvelt / Nyack Post 310 American Legion / 11 AM Nyack Memorial Park honoring Jerry Donnellan, former Rockland County Veterans Service Agency Director and Veterans Advocate, and the Installation of a Bronze Plaque in his honor.
  • Monday - Blauvelt Lions Club Memorial Day Ceremony at 12 pm in Lions Park

But remember, beaches and trailheads will be busy (even at full operating capacity, many state beaches and parks may fill up on warm, sunny days). Anyone parking outside of designated areas will be ticketed. Check the parks department's website, or download the free NY State Parks Explorer mobile app for park capacity closure alerts.

Throughout Rockland, the transit schedule is changed for Memorial Day:

  • TOR buses will operate Saturday service on TOR routes 59, 91, 92, 93, 94 and Loop 3, no service on
  • routes 95 or 97, and regular service on Loop 1 and Loop 2.
  • TRIPS Paratransit buses will operate A.D.A. service only.
  • Hudson Link buses will operate Weekend service.
  • Coach USA Rockland Coaches and Shortline buses will not operate.
  • Clarkstown Mini Trans will not operate.
  • Metro-North trains will operate Weekend/Holiday service.
  • The Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry has suspended service.
  • NJ Transit trains will operate Weekend service.

Additionally, Memorial Day parades will detour bus service in Pearl River and Suffern. Go to

Information Center office will be closed on Memorial Day.
