10,000 Remain Without Power After Storm: Christmas 2020

More than 80,000 homes and businesses lost power in the high winds and heavy rains.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Thousands of households remained without power Saturday as crews from the four utility companies serving the Hudson Valley worked for the second day on more than 80,000 outages from the Christmas Eve storm.

As of 10 a.m.:

  • NYSEG reported 1,015 customers still out in Dutchess County, 1,381 in Putnam, 475 in Ulster and 1,333 in Westchester.
  • Central Hudson reported 1,214 out in Dutchess, 1,348 in Orange, 160 in Putnam, and 437 in Ulster.
  • Orange & Rockland Utilities reported 489 customers out in Orange and 1,516 out in Rockland.
  • Con Edison reported 534 customers out in Westchester County.

CenHud officials reported that repair crews had restored power to more than 80 percent of homes and businesses hit by the heavy rains and damaging winds that moved through the Hudson Valley Thursday night and Friday morning. They expected to have the remaining customers without power in Putnam, Ulster and Dutchess restored by 10 p.m. Saturday.

O&R officials said they expected 95 percent of the remaining customers without power in Rockland, Bergen and Passaic counties will be restored to service no later than 11 p.m. Saturday.

In Clarkstown, Street School at 31 Zukor Road remains open for a warming and charging center.

Central Hudson plans to distribute more supplies of dry ice on Saturday afternoon, including at the Home Depot in Fishkill, though officials warned that dry ice has been subject to a national shortage, most recently for the shipping and preserving of COVID-19 vaccines.

Temperatures aren't expected to rise above freezing Saturday.
