It was Sunday afternoon when the driver, two Good Samaritans, a police officer and the car were hauled back up.

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, NY — A car smashed through the wood guardrail near the entrance to Croton Gorge Park on Sunday, went airborne and plunged through trees for about 75 feet before coming to rest at the edge of the Croton River. The incident took place at 12:30 p.m. during a day of heavy rainfall.
Croton-on-Hudson Fire, Croton EMS, Croton Police, NY State Police, Westchester County Police and Ossining EMS were all called to the scene.
The driver of the crashed car was attempting to avoid another vehicle while driving on Route 129, Croton fire officials said.

Firefighters set up a rope and sent one member down the hillside to assess the scene, and then their crews helped everyone back up the hill.
The driver of the car and the CPD Sergeant were taken to an area hospital for evaluation of injuries. (Our friend from the CPD may have injured his ankle during his efforts to assist the crash victim, fire officials said on Facebook).
Members of the fire department stayed at the scene for two hours while A&P Towing winched the car up the steep slope.
