Croton-Harmon Concussion Management Held Community Discussion

Area health experts and district personnel engaged in a discussion regarding the concussion policy.

With much media attention focused on concussion in athletics, ranging from recreational sports to professional arenas, the Croton-Harmon School District’s Board of Education hosted a Concussion Management Panel on May 19.

Community members in attendance heard from panel members that included health experts, as well as a number of district coaches and other athletic personnel:

 Dr. Mark Herceg – commissioner, Westchester County Department of Community

Mental health

 Dr. Eric Meir – district physician

 Steve Palenscar – varsity boys lacrosse coach

 Joseph Streany – varsity football, girls basketball and JV boys lacrosse coach

 Kerri Tracy – district health teacher, softball coach and athletic trainer

 Beth Weinstein – JV girls soccer coach

 Jonathan Weinstein – varsity boys soccer coach

The district has a detailed concussion protocol in place and offers a number of facts and resources about concussions on its athletics website. Discussion about the protocol, maintaining measures that help prevent injury and the importance of communication between student- athletes, parents, coaches and other district personnel was emphasized during the panel. Attendees had an opportunity to ask the panelists questions during the panel discussion.
