Croton-Harmon Students Feel the Rhythm with Drumming for Fitness

Students combined their knowledge of musical elements with aerobic moves to get their hearts racing in new Drumming for Fitness unit.

From CHUFSD; Students at Croton-Harmon’s Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School drummed along to well-known songs like “We Will Rock You” and “YMCA” as they combined their knowledge of musical elements with aerobic moves to get their heart moving during the newly-introduced Drumming for Fitness unit.

“Drumming for Fitness combines dancing, drumming and a cardio workout,” said Principal Kelly Maloney. “Students are learning choreographed routines based on the musical form of some of their favorite songs.”

During the course of three weeks, second- through fourth-grade students are working alongside both their physical education teachers and music teacher to participate in the unique program. Drumming for Fitness was made possible through the support of the CET PTA, which funded the 75 yoga balls, and Home Depot, which donated 75 five-gallon buckets for the program.
