Croton Harmon Students Finish 'Change' Projects

Eighth grade students finished their end of the year inter-disciplinary projects and presented them at a press conference for parents.

From Croton Harmon Schools: Eighth-grade students took an in-depth interdisciplinary approach to their “CHANGE” projects that capped off their final year at Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School.

Using skills and knowledge from English, math, science and social studies, the Croton-Harmon students selected a topic of interest that they hoped to see change, conduct research and provide possible solutions to the problem.

The culmination of their projects’ inquiry research was presented at a press conference for parents on May 31. Students spoke knowledgeably about topics ranging from cyberbullying, sweatshops, firearm laws and more.

Jack Eisinger said he had seen several of his family members suffer from allergies, even experiencing scares that required them to be rushed to the hospital.

“I see what they go through and it’s really terrible,” he said, noting that he discovered there was very little information about allergies available. Eisinger proposed that even a small adjustment to the federal budget would allow more monies to be allocated to allergy scientists, who can further research the cause and treatment of allergies.

Jerilyn Harrison researched how humans are affecting the earth through deforestation and the causes behind global warming. She was shocked to find out that every second, trees that would equal the size of a football field are cut down.

“I want to call for an ideological and moral shift,” she said. “It’s the mentality that I can just cut down one tree that’s the problem. Humans aren’t addressing the issues.”
