June Heat Wave: HV Heat Advisories Extended Through Wednesday

With heat indices up to 104 degrees, officials beg residents to check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The heat wave in the region will last another day, the National Weather Service said Tuesday morning, with heat index values making it feel even hotter on Wednesday as well.

New heat advisories are in effect for southeast New York and portions of northeast New Jersey and southern Connecticut until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

"The real story remains the humidity that has locked into the eastern US. Dew points in the 70s will combine with the highs in the low to mid 90s," said Alex Marra and Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. "Heat index values as high as 104° are possible."

A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.

Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.

On Wednesday, hot, humid weather is expected with scattered thunderstorms mainly during the afternoon. In the mid-Hudson region, there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms Wednesday with damaging winds, and very heavy rainfall. Ponding of water on roadways and standing water in low lying areas is possible.

"Looking to Wednesday, the heat and humidity hold in place, and we are likely to see a 4th straight day of temps in the 90s, and heat index values between 95° and 105°," Hudson Valley Weather said.

Meanwhile, Excessive Heat Warnings are in effect throughout the Northern Great Basin and Northern Rockies, as well as parts of western Nevada and interior California. The core of the extreme heat will be found across interior Washington and Oregon as well as northern Idaho and northwest Montana, where high temperatures are expected to soar into the 100s and 110s (20-30+ degrees above average), the National Weather Service said.
