Train Show, Ice-Skating, Holiday Concert: Weekend In The Parks

Get outside! Learn how animals survive the winter, watch for winter birds, help gussie up old stone walls, check out Christmas on the farm

Here are some of the events and activities around Westchester parks this weekend:

THURSDAY - SUNDAY, DEC. 13 – 16

Westchester’s Winter Wonderland – Thursday and Sunday, 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.; Friday and Satirday, 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Kensico Dam Plaza, One Bronx River Parkway, Valhalla. A one-of-a-kind holiday event featuring the Santa Experience, unlimited skating, a circus, great rides, food trucks, gift vendors and more on select dates through December. Admission $20. SATURDAY, DEC. 15

Project Feeder Watch – 10 a.m. – 12 noon. Stop by the museum for some light refreshments and learn about the birds that frequent the feeders at this time of year. Trailside Nature Museum at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Routes 35 and 121 South, Cross River -- (914) 864-7322

Spin ‘n’ Knit – 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Hilltop Hanover Farm, 1271 Hanover St., Yorktown Heights – (914) 962-2368. Join this monthly spinning and knitting group. No fee or registration required for first-time attendees; $5 for each subsequent class. Info athilltophanoverfarm.org.

Winter Ecology Walk -- 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Read Wildlife Sanctuary, Playland Park, Rye – (914) 967-8720. A leisurely stroll to learn about how plants, trees, and animals survive the freezing winter months, followed by refreshments provided by the Friends of Read Wildlife Sanctuary.

Volunteer Work Project – 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Marshlands Conservancy, Boston Post Road, Rye – (914) 835-4466. Help beautify the historic stonewalls by removing some of the debris that is on them. Bring work gloves; hand tools provided. Great for any type of service credit hours.

Special Holiday Concert – 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. Muscoot Farm, Route 100, Somers – (914) 864-7282. Enjoy the holiday spirit with performances by the Westchester Oratorio at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the activities building.

SATURDAY – SUNDAY, DEC. 15 – 16

Project Feeder Watch – 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Croton Point Nature Center, Croton Point Park, Croton-on-Hudson – (914) 862-5297. Identify and count birds at the nature center's bird feeders. Beginners encouraged, all welcome! Saturday and Sunday mornings through March. Go to projectfeederwatch.org.

Holidays on the Hill Holiday Train Show, Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial, Route 35, Somers – (914) 864-7268 – 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Visits with Santa, food, conservatory exhibit, holiday displays, gift shopping and more on weekends through Dec. 31. Info and tickets atlasdonpark.org.

Christmas on the Farm, Muscoot Farm, Route 100, Somers – (914) 864-7282-- Saturday 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Experience Christmas on Muscoot Farm with decorations in the main house and many of the farm buildings.

SUNDAY, DEC. 16

Animal Tracking in the Snow, Cranberry Lake Preserve, Old Orchard St., North White Plains – (914) 428-1005– 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. Discover the secret lives of animals by following their tracks in the snow. Weather and snow permitting.
