War Dog Memorial Unveiling; African-American Festival; Crafts

Here are some of the events happening this weekend at Westchester parks:

SATURDAY, JUNE 22

Special Places, Special Insects – 10 a.m. Trailside Nature Museum at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Routes 35 and 121 South, Cross River – (914) 864-7322. Hike with insect expert Harry Zirlin to learn about some special habitats and the amazing insects that live there.

Volunteer Corps Work Day – 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary, Playland Park, Rye – (914) 967-8720. Help with invasive plant removal, trail work, beach clean-up and more. A great way to have fun, get some exercise and give something back to the earth.

Faery Stories – 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary, Playland Park, Rye – (914) 967-8720. An hour of enchanting tales of fairies, swamp elves and other supernatural denizens of Read with master storyteller Jonathan Kruk.

Unveiling of War Dog Memorial – 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial, Route 35, Somers – (914) 864-7268. Dedication of new memorial that honors all military canines that have loyally served American soldiers in past and present conflicts. Lasdonpark.org.

Outdoor Crafts and Nature Games – 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Cranberry Lake Preserve, Old Orchard Street, North White Plains – (914) 428-1005. Create some crafts and play outdoor nature games. Weather permitting. Refreshments will be served. Registration required by 6/18.

Volunteer Work Project: Creating Trail Borders – 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Marshlands Conservancy, Boston Post Road, Rye – (914) 835-4466. Great for service credit hours. Bring work gloves. All hand tools will be provided.

Band Bed Rock Concert – 7:30 p.m. Playland Park, Playland Parkway, Rye – (914) 813-7010. The original ‘80s and ‘90s hair band experience. Free with park admission. Parking fees apply.

Bicycle Sundays – 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Bronx River Parkway, White Plains to Yonkers – (914) 995-4050. Bike, jog, ride, walk or skate the parkway from the Westchester County Center in White Plains to Scarsdale Road in Yonkers. Also 6/30.

African-American Heritage Festival – 12 noon – 7 p.m. Kensico Dam Plaza, One Bronx River Parkway, Valhalla – (914) 231-4033. Music and entertainment, crafts and food vendors. Free admission.

MONDAY, JUNE 24

Fourth Monday Bird Walk – 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Croton Point Park, Croton Point Avenue, Croton-on-Hudson – (914) 862-5290. Bring binoculars and join the experts from Saw Mill River Audubon for a hike through the various environments in the park. Meet in the ballfield parking lot.
