Rental Building Chops Doorman Service, Angers Tenants

Arias plans to cut doorman service in half and employ CCTV from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

The Park Slope rental building Arias is facing unhappy residents after cutting back doorman service, the Brownstoner reported Tuesday.

Management announced in an email to tenants that the building will scale back to 12-hour service from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Arias, located at 150 Fourth Ave., previously boasted 24-hour doorman service.

"This has elicited an aggressive response from residents – many of whom, like myself, just renewed our leases with rent increases (note: 2 days prior to the doorman email I received an email asking me to confirm I was staying, which hardly seems like a coincidence) – concerned about safety, convenience and, frankly, getting ripped off," one resident told Brownstoner in an email.

Arias says it will use CCTV during off hours and is considering a virtual doorman that would "allow tenants to screen visitors and gain entry through an offsite command center."
