3 Unions Are Recruiting Apprentices In The Hudson Valley

The carpenters, electricians and boilermakers unions are running recruitment drives.

There are three unions running recruitment drives for which most Hudson Valley residents can apply. Each of the drives will run until the spring of 2021. Application procedures differ.

Boilermakers: The Boilermakers are seeking five construction apprentices. Their drive runs through March 15, 2021. The openings represent the total number for three recruitment regions – the Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island.

Applications can be obtained from JATC for Boilermakers Northeast Area, Local Union #5, 24 Van Siclen Ave, Floral Park, NY, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the third Monday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

Applicants for the Boilermakers' apprenticeships:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof of age will be required after selection or at the time of enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection or at the time of enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of a Boilermaker (Construction), which may include:
    • Working an 8-hour day while continually on feet.
    • Lifting and carrying weights in excess of 95 pounds for extended periods.
    • Working in extreme weather conditions and temperatures.
    • Working in restricted or confined spaces.
    • Working at heights of 20 feet or more on scaffolds or platforms.
    • Working in ditches or trenches up to 20 feet deep.
    • Working in nuclear facilities.
    • Working in hazardous conditions.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must pass a drug and alcohol test, at the expense of the sponsor, within 48 hours of enrollment in apprenticeship.

Carpenters: The North Atlantic States Carpenters Training Fund is conducting a recruitment through June 1, 2021 for 20 Carpenter (Pile Driver/Dockbuilder) apprentices.

Applications are available online during the recruitment period. Applicants for the carpenters union apprenticeships:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required at time of application.
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of a carpenter, which may include:
    • Working on scaffolds and in confined spaces.
    • Working under conditions of inclement weather, such as rain, snow, cold, heat, and direct sunlight.
    • Performing constant repetitive motions.
    • Climbing and working from heights.
    • Lifting items weighing a minimum of 50 lbs.
    • Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship. If applicant tests positive, he/she cannot reapply for one year.
  • Must be willing to attend required classes at the approved school and travel to various locations statewide.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites (in counties listed below) and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must live in the geographical jurisdiction which includes all New York State counties excluding Nassau, Suffolk and the counties of the five boroughs of New York (Kings, Bronx, Queens, New York and Richmond).
  • Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

Electricians: USIS Electric, Inc. will conduct a recruitment through April 29, 2021 for 24 electrician apprentices.

Applications will be available at USIS Electric, Inc., 35 West Jefferson Avenue, Pearl River, NY, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 - 4 p.m., excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

Applicants must apply in person and allow up to one hour for the application process to be completed.

All applications must be received no later than April 29, 2021.

Applicants for the electrician apprenticeships:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED), including one year of high school algebra
  • Must be physically able to perform the work of the trade, which may include:
    • Pulling cable
    • Lifting up to 50 pounds
    • Carrying 25 pounds
    • Climbing ladders
    • Standing 90% of the day
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must be a resident of Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties of New York or Bergen County in New Jersey

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
