PEARL RIVER, NY — The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory holds its annual open house Saturday. And if you've never had a chance to get there, don't miss it. The Open House is an all-day festival that celebrates the awesome power of earth science — from geology to meteorology to seismology — and gives you a chance for hands-on activities, amazing demonstrations, gripping exhibits and fascinating lectures in all the areas the observatory's scientists work. This year there are exhibits in:
- Climate and Life
- Changing Ice, Changing Coastlines
- Extreme Weather and Climate
- Anticipating Earthquakes
- Real-Time Earth
When we went a couple of years ago, we were most fascinated by being able to watch seismic activity being graphed in real time. Or maybe seeing how seismic events ripple around the earth. Or maybe the baby submarine, or the core sample archive, or the mass spectrometer. And we barely scratched the surface (see what we did there?).
This fascinating world of scientific discovery is perched on a rocky Palisades bluff looming high over the Hudson River. On Oct. 5, you get to peer inside. Catch a lecture. Tour a lab and talk to researchers about their discoveries. There's lots for kids to do too.

P.S. You may not think much about an archive of core samples. But the line to get in the archive gets long really fast. Don't say we didn't warn you.
