Gifts For Trash Crews Stolen From Recycling Bins

The time-honored method doesn't work any more, police said.

ORANGETOWN, NY — For generations, many people have put presents out for the public works crews to thank them at this season of giving for all the work they do. The gifts have ranged over the years from such things as six-packs of beer to boxes of oranges to envelopes of cash.

This year, Orangetown police have received several reports that gift envelopes put out with recycling bins had been stolen. The thefts took place about 6:15 a.m.

Police are seeking any surveillance video that might ID the perpetrators. They also suggest that generous residents try a different method of thanking the folks who pick up their trash.
