HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The National Weather Service has updated one hazardous outlook and issued another about strong thunderstorms expected Wednesday afternoon that could bring hail or even a tornado, making temperatures plummet and leaving gusty winds in their wake.
For Dutchess and Ulster counties: "Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible especially south and east of the Capital District this afternoon. Main threat is for damaging winds gusts, however large hail and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out."

For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties: "Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon as a strong cold front moves across the area. The primary threat will be damaging winds."

Some thunderstorms could also bring torrential downpours that could lead to ponding on roadways and in areas with poor drainage, said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Paul Walker.

For Orange and Putnam, a freeze warning is also in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday.
"Freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing," the NWS said. "Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing."
After the cold front comes through, brisk and gusty winds are expected Thursday with gusts of 35 to 45 mph. "If stronger gusts are expected then a wind advisory will be needed," the NWS said.
