Rescue Needed In Flash Flood On Route 303

The National Weather Service issued a warning that is in effect until 6:30 p.m.

ORANGEBURG, NY — Heavy rains from a fast-moving thunderstorm flooded Route 303 Tuesday afternoon, necessitating rescues.

Among the agencies responding were the Orangeburg Fire Department and Piermont Fire Department divers to get the occupants of four cars to dry land.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for Rockland County at 3:30 p.m. to be in effect until 6:30 p.m., saying 1 to 2 inches of rain had already fallen. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...Paramus, Tarrytown, Dobbs Ferry, Nyack, Tappan, Greenwich, PearlRiver, Oradell, Norwood, Hawthorne, Orangeburg, Upper Nyack, Dumont, New Milford, Westwood, Hillsdale, River Vale, Cresskill, Closter and Briarcliff Manor. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area.

The National Weather Service reminds everyone:

Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you can do so safely.
A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property.
