Rockland Lawmakers To Vote On Agricultural District

The Rockland Farm Alliance has been working on getting such a district in the county since 2008.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — The Rockland County Legislature will vote Tuesday on whether to establish a county-wide agricultural district. Agricultural districts comprise nearly 9 million acres of land in 53 counties in New York, and Rockland is one of the few counties without one.

An agricultural district is not zoning. It is a geographic area within a county which consists of
predominately viable agricultural land, and it provides right-to-farm protections. The Rockland Farm Alliance has been working on getting such a district in the county since 2008.

"This vote on February 4th is the culmination of years of work to establish this much-needed Ag District and has the support of County Executive Ed Day," RFA officials said. "This is very important and we need everyone to show up in force! If there is one thing you can do for local farming this winter, it would be to show strength in numbers!"
