Services Begin Oct. 8 for Sister Dorothy Wieting

Sister Dorothy was 97.

Sister Dorothy Wieting, formerly Sr. Jeanne Ricarda, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 78 years died on October 4, 2014. St. Dorothy Wieting was 97 years of age.

Sr. Dorothy was born to Harry Wieting and Jeanne Shenton Wieting on July 15, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 24, 1936 from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Brooklyn, NY. Sister Dorothy received the Dominican habit on July 3, 1937, professed first vows on July 5, 1938 and final vows on July 5, 1941.

Sister held the BS in Education and the MS in Education/Speech from Fordham University and the Doctorate in Speech Pathology from Columbia University.

Sr. Dorothy’s many years of active ministry included teaching at the following schools: St. Peter’s Liberty, NY 1939-1943; Holy Spirit, Bronx, NY 1943-1947; Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Academy, Goshen, NY 1947-1951; Our Lady of Victory, Bronx, NY 1951-1952; St. Dominic’s Home, Blauvelt, NY 1954-1955; St. Anselm, Bronx, NY 1955-1963; St. Luke School, Bronx, NY 1963-1966.
After obtaining the doctorate in Speech Pathology, Sister taught at Dominican College, Orangeburg, NY 1967-1982. In 1982 sister retired from Dominican College and served as Dominican Convent Archivist for six years. Her part-time work included Lecturer/Lay Ministry, Rockland County 1989-1990; Speech Pathologist, St. Dominic’s Home 1990-1991; Speech Therapist, St. Dominic Convent, 1991-1994; Director RCIA/Grants Researcher, St Catherine Parish/Dominican College,1994-2001; Catechetical Special Ed and Prep, 2005-2007; leader of Bible Study, St. Catherine/St. Augustine Parishes 2008-2011. In 2012, at the age of 95, Sister Dorothy retired to St. Martin de Porres Community.

In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Dorothy is survived by her niece, Donna Wieting, several cousins and dear friends. She was predeceased by her brother Harry Wieting, Jr.
