Community Corner
Sloatsburg's Characters Restaurant & Pub Is More Than a Business
It's a Beacon of light that brings warmth and comfort to a community in many different ways.

Characters was established in 2006 by an Irishman , Tommy Acton, from Galway, Ireland. Galway is known to have the best pubs and foods in Ireland [I do not wish to trigger an argument]. Tommy brought that tradition to the wee Village of Sloatsburg in the South West corner of Rockland in the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains.
When Tommy's beloved wife Dionne passed prematurely, Tommy infused another quality into the Characters story, he decided to raise money for worthy charities to keep Dionne's memory glowing, because Dione loved helping others.
In the past six years Characters/Tommy has raised over $50,000 for causes in Dionne's name.

It became a local community & patrons' cause and mission in support of Tommy and in memory of Dionne.
In the first three years, the fund raising was done by a Jets football game trip. In the recent three years, it's been done by a golf outing.

last year, 2020, the outing raised $12,000 which was shared equally with the Sloatsburg Fire Department, the Suffern Hose Company and two you might not know about. One is the Brest Buddies organization of eleven Irish ladies and one lady of Sicilian blood who is married to John Carollo of Del Arte restaurant fame. {They were recipients in 2019}. Their mission is to help fund research to find the cause & cure of breast cancer.
The other recipient is the "Rockland Homes for Heroes" charity that exists to help eliminate veteran homelessness in the Mid Hudson Valley.
Ergo, Characters is not only a great destination for families and all others in search of great food and the ambience of a traditional pub for the comfort of socialization & companionship, it is an oasis of humanitarianism and a memorial to a lady who loved to help others.
