South Orangetown School Calendar 2017-18: First Day Of School, Vacations, Conferences

The first day of school in South Orangetown is September 5. Feel free to mark it on your calendar as one of the most dreaded days of the year for students and teachers — and feel free not to feel guilty about marking it as one of your favorites. The South Orangetown School District has released its 2017-2018 calendar for public schools.

The calendar includes important dates such as winter and spring vacations, religious holidays, federal holidays, early dismissals and parent-teacher conferences.

Here is the full list of dates to know for this school year:

• 9/21-22: Rosh Hashanah - No School

October

• 10/9: Columbus Day - No School

November

• 11/9: Half-Day Secondary Parent-Teacher Conferences; Elementary Superintendent’s Conference Day
• 11/10: Veterans Day - No School
• 11/22: Half-Day Superintendent’s Conference Day
• 11/23-24: Thanksgiving Recess - No School

December

• 12/8: Half-Day Elementary Parent-Teacher Conferences; Secondary Superintendent’s Conference Day
• 12/22: Half-Day Superintendent’s Conference Day
• 12/25-29: December Recess

January

• 1/1: December Recess continues
• 1/2: Schools Reopen
• 1/15: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - No School

February

• 2/19-23: Presidents’ Day/Mid-Winter Recess - No School

Emergency Closing Days

In anticipation of emergency closings, such as snow days, the district makes an effort to build the school calendar with additional days in order to first comply with New York State Education Law related to student attendance and then with any EASO contractual obligations. Each year’s calendar varies due to the number of holidays that fall on weekdays; therefore, there is an annual review to ensure that the district meets the legal attendance requirements while adding a cushion of potential emergency days.

UNUSED SNOW DAYS*

• If 0 snow days are used, March 28, 29 & May 25 will be vacation days
• If 1 day is used, March 29 & May 25 will be vacation days (March 28 school will be in session)
• If 2 days are used, May 25 will be a vacation day (March 28 & 29 school will be in session)
• If 3 days are used, calendar stands as is
