Architects of the Bahaus
Gropius, Mies Van der Rohe, and their meaning for us now

Celebrating this year's 100th anniversary of the opening of the Bauhaus, the innovative school of design that revolutionized art and design throughout the world, Mt. Pleasant Library is proud to present: “Architects of the Bauhaus: Gropius, Mies Van der Rohe, and Their Meaning for Us Now,” a richly illustrated PowerPoint presentation given by architects Dale Laurin and Anthony Romeo.
Both Walter Gropius, who founded the Bauhaus in 1919 and Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, its last director before the Bauhaus was closed by the fascist German government, immigrated to the United States, where their ideas had, and continue to have, a huge impact on American design. The presentation, which focuses on aspects of their lives, their work, and its immediacy for people’s lives today, is based on this principle stated by educator Eli Siegel, founder of Aesthetic Realism: “All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves.”
Dale Laurin is an architect with over 40 years of professional experience in public and private architectural practice. Anthony Romeo, formerly principal of Urbane Architects, is Executive Director of the Build-it-Back Program at the NYC Department of Design and Construction. He teaches architectural history, as did Mr. Laurin, at the CUNY College of Technology. Both men are grateful to study and teach Aesthetic Realism, the education which is the basis for their Architecture and You talk series, given in public presentations throughout the tri-state area and beyond.
