WINTER FARMING
WINTER SHOPPING

Winter provides extra challenges on our farms. It's dark when our producers wake up and dark when they do their evening chores. Paths and barn entrances must be kept clear of snow. Machinery and vehicles need repairs. Farmers need to be attentive to ensure fresh food remains safe in high tunnels. There's plenty of buttoning up one's Carhartt layers against the cold while breaking ice on water troughs and hauling feed for the animals. And when there's midwinter calving or kidding to be done a farmer's work runs 24/7 for a while. Thanks again to all our producers for their great work arriving with the foods we love, week after week!

Winter and COVID have provided challenges at the Market too. To make things work this season we reinvented where, how and when to shop the Market during winter. There was worry shoppers might add "why" when reviewing an outdoor winter market. Not so! Our producers have been really pleased to see so many shoppers make the effort to preorder and visit the Market each week. So thanks to our hard core shoppers who keep making the Market possible with their ongoing support!

Phelps Health Tip:
Lead Sponsor Phelps Hospital Northwell Health shares the following: "Encourage your child to help pick out a healthy recipe and then to assist you in preparing the recipe. Kids are more likely to try a new food or meal if they're involved with the process".

PREORDER OR WALK UP?

Some shoppers still ask if they can arrive at the Market as a walk-up shopper without having preordered. The answer is "yes", albeit with these caveats:

  • Mead Orchards offers their apples and vegetables for preorder-only due to cold weather risk to their items (though they have a limited supply of cider some weeks for walk-up).
  • Bread Alone is preorder-only (though they have a limited walk-up option to sell any items remaining from their process of packing preorders).
  • Gajeski Produce offers their items for preorder (though on "warmer" days they offer some vegetables for limited walk-up).
  • Maple View Farm is also focused on preorders as their greens would be damaged if displayed most winter days (that said, they have a very limited walk-up option on warmer days).
  • All our other producers offer their items both preorder and for walk up purchases (ie: honey, jams, meats, baked goods) -- but knowing you'll get what you want is touch and go. Vendors are only required to offer their full options online in winter.

If you preorder it is easier for vendors as they know what to bring to market, guaranteeing you get what you're seeking. Given the harsh conditions in winter the overriding goal is brevity of service (which preordering accomplishes). We're trying to help shoppers AND vendors get in and get out quickly on Saturdays. Therefore, walk up shoppers should be aware that preorder customers are served first as part of the goal to move as many shoppers through the marketplace within reduced hours. Whatever way you shop the Market we thank you for sticking with us year-round.
