PLEASANTVILLE, NY —A GoFundMe page has been started for a family whose Pleasantville home was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning. According to the page, the family woke up during the fire and escaped with their dogs. But they "lost everything." Their Bedford Road home was so badly damaged, it had to be demolished.

As of Thursday afternoon, the page had raised $6,752 of its 10,000 goal for the family. The person leading the GoFundMe effort said the family would remain anonymous in order to protect their privacy. But they said the family has been part of the Pleasantville/Chappaqua community for a long time, and are well known.

"Please consider helping them get thorough this difficult time," wrote the person running the GoFundMe page.

According to Chappaqua Fire Chief Russell Maitland, crews from several local departments worked to put out the blaze, which was difficult because the home was built in the 1890s.

Maitland said it took crews two hours just to get the fire under control. It then took another few hours to "knock down hot spots."

"The balloon frame construction and terra cotta roof all made for a very challenging situation. It went from outside, to the inside wall and took off. By the time we got there, it was fully involved," Maitland said.

The Mount Pleasant Building Inspector gave the order to demolish what was left of the home.

On Tuesday, Maitland said it was hard to determine the exact cause of the fire because the home had to be demolished. He said it still was "undetermined" whether the fire was an accident.

Matiland said the Chappaqua Fire Department and Pleasantville Fire Department were at the scene and aided by: the Thornwood Fire Department, Millwood Fire Department, Mount Kisco Fire Department, Pleasantville EMS, Mount Kisco EMS, Westchester EMS, Westchester Battalion, Westchester Origin Team and the Mount Pleasant Police. The Armonk Fire Department was standing by at Chappaqua headquarters.

Those running the GoFundMe page thanked the firefighters and emergency crews for their effort.

"Much thanks to the Fire Department and first responders for their hard work doing their best to put the fire out and preventing it from spreading further," they wrote.
