Join us as author Field Horne presents lively and unexpected tales from Westchester County’s past! He will also be signing copies of his newly-released Westchester County: A History.
Unlike any of the earlier books, this one looks at subjects that were not considered important years ago, such as the contributions of African Americans to the county’s life since the eighteenth century. Farming, manufacturing, changing modes of transportation, the development of villages and of suburbs, the profound impact of city water supply, and the waves of immigrants are all studied carefully. The talk will highlight twenty of the most unexpected discoveries during research for the book.
Horne, a resident of Saratoga Springs, grew up in Mount Pleasant and was the eleventh generation of his family in the county. He was graduated from Westlake High School and Williams College, and earned a graduate degree in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program. His first job was as researcher for Philipsburg Manor Upper Mills and Van Cortlandt Manor restorations. Since moving upstate in 1978 he has served as director and curator of several museums, and has authored many books including The Greene County Catskills: A History (1994) and Saratoga Springs: A Centennial History (2015). He continues a local connection as a trustee of the Field Hall Foundation in Yorktown.
