Capitol Theater Celebrates 500th Show With Dylan Performance

Bob Dylan was the first artist to perform at the renovated Capitol Theater.

PORT CHESTER, NY—Bob Dylan was the first artist to perform at Port Chester's Capitol Theater when it re-opened after renovations in 2012. So, it's fitting that he will perform the theater's 500th show with performances on June 13, 14 and 15.

The theater turns 91 this year and was designed in 1926 by famous theater architect Thomas Lamb. The 2,000-capacity theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been called "the original rock palace" because it showcased such rock legends as Chuck Berry, David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Derek and the Dominos, and Black Sabbath.

Jerry Garcia once called the theater his favorite venue, claiming, "See, there's only two theaters, man, that are set up pretty groovy all around for music and for smooth stage changes, good lighting and all that—the Fillmore and The Capitol Theater. And those are the only two in the whole country."
