Healthy Life Series Continues in May at Phelps Hospital

Series offers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups

All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for May follows:

Tuesday, May 1 - Elder Law Series: Health Insurance Considerations on the Way to Retirement This presentation covers the basics of Medicare and then shifts to how Medicare works with COBRA, retiree plans and the Affordable Care Act. Thursday, May 3 - How to Help with Opioid Addiction, Friends, Family, Self Are you, a family member, a friend or someone you love suffering from opioid addiction? If you are someone providing care, someone concerned about a love one and not knowing next steps or options, possibly suffering from addiction yourself or just interested in learning more about the opioid crisis in today’s society, let us help you find the resources you need. Wednesday, May 4 – LSVT Program for Parkinson’s An evidence-based exercise program for patients diagnoses with Parkinson’s disease. Wednesday, May 4 - Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing group games, from 2:00 - 3:30 pm. At Phelps Hospital, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, in the Boardroom. Park behind the hospital and enter through the Auditorium entrance. Tuesday, May 8 – My Aching Back Back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide, and 80 percent of the population will experience it some time in their lives. This presentation will focus on causes, evaluation, treatment and prevention of back pain. Tuesday, May 8 - Better Breathers Club A free, monthly interactive support group for people with breathing disorders or pulmonary fibrosis sponsored by Phelps, the American Lung Association, and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Participants who use oxygen may switch to the hospital’s supply during the meeting. Light refreshments will be served. Reservations are required. Tuesday, May 8 and 22 - Holistic Pain Support Program People suffering from chronic pain will have access to comprehensive pain management services including exercise, nutritional guidance, psychological support and complementary medicine practices. Thursday, May 10 - The Breakfast Club The Breakfast Club, designed especially for seniors, includes a free breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program. The group meets monthly except for August and December. The group meets from 8:30-10:30 am, in the Cafeteria (G Level) at Phelps Hospital, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. Thursday, May 10 - Osteoporosis Support and Education A free monthly group program for individuals with osteoporosis, providing education on nutrition, exercise (weight-bearing, strengthening and balance), activities of daily living and treatment options. The sessions are held from 10:45 – 11:30am, the second Thursday of the month in the Boardroom (C Level) at Phelps Hospital, 701 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow. Park behind the hospital and enter through the Auditorium entrance. Proceed down one flight to the C-Level. The boardroom is at the end of the hall on the right. Friday, May 11 - Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group Caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. Join us and receive the emotional, educational and social support needed to successfully care for someone with dementia. Tuesday, May 15 - Senior Steps offers health screenings for seniors on the third Tuesday of the month from 10:00 - 11:30 am. Tuesday, May 15, 16, 17 – Women’s Health Week The goal of National Women’s Health Week is to empower women to make their own health a priority. Come celebrate women’s health and wellness with us at this three-day event! Session topics include yoga, healthy cooking, breast care, menopause, dermatology and spa services. Friday, May 18 - Senior Debate Senior Debate is a lively, interactive discussion. This year’s topic is, “Whether Social Media and the Internet Bring More Harm than Good to Modern Society.” The audience-centered debate method used by the moderator is informal and relaxed. Cancer Support Programs – Phelps Hospital offers a monthly series of cancer support programs for patients who will be receiving cancer treatment. Topics are New Patient Orientation; Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Treatment Orientation and Patient Family Cancer Support Group. Times and days vary, so please call for more information. Diabetes Educational Program for Adults This two-session educational program for adults with diabetes is held every month at Phelps (date and time may vary). Learn what diabetes is, different medications available, how to prevent and manage complications, blood sugar targets, what foods to eat, how to count carbs and much more. Pre-registration and a physician referral are required. There may be a charge for this class, depending on insurance coverage. Please note that attendance at both classes is required.
