Healthy Life Series Continues in November at Phelps Hospital
Phelps Hospital offers a wealth of health education programs throughout the year. Programs during the month of November are featured here

All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for November is as follows:
Saturday, November 3 - Light The Night Join “Team Phelps” for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk to help the LLS make cures happen by providing patient support services, advocating for lifesaving treatments and pioneering the most promising cancer research anywhere! 5:00pm Kingsland Point Park 299 Palmer Avenue Sleepy Hollow, NY. Wednesday, November 7 - Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing group games, from 2:00 - 3:30 pm, in the Boardroom. Park behind the hospital and enter through the Auditorium entrance. Then take the elevator down to the C-Level and turn left when you exit. Thursday, November 8 – The Breakfast Club Includes a free breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program. Friday, November 9 - Alzheimer’s Support Group Alzheimer’s disease is life changing for both those who are diagnosed and those close to them. The Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group provides a safe place for caregivers, family, and friends of persons with dementia to meet and develop a mutual support system. 10:00am – 12:00pm, in the 755 Building, Room 545. Tuesday, November 13 - Holistic Pain Support Program People suffering from chronic pain will have access to comprehensive pain management services including exercise, nutritional guidance, psychological support and complementary medicine practices. 12:00pm – 1:00pm, in the 755 Building, 4th Floor Family Medicine Residency Conference Room. Tuesday, November 13 -Better Breathers Club/ Pulmonary Fibrosis Support A free interactive support group for people with breathing disorders or pulmonary fibrosis, sponsored by Phelps, the American Lung Association and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Each month’s meeting features a presentation on a pertinent topic. Participants who use oxygen may switch to the hospital’s supply during the meeting. Light refreshments are served. 12 noon – 1:00pm. Friday, November 16 - 31st Annual Champagne Ball Join us at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club on November 16, 2018 to celebrate the hospital’s most important fundraiser of the year. Ball proceeds help underwrite the purchase of life saving equipment, support the training of doctors and medical personnel, and fund advanced facilities such as our SurgiCenter. Most importantly, funds raised help ensure that every person and family who comes to Phelps has access to the best health care right here in our neighborhood. 777 Albany Post Road, Briarcliff Manor.
Tuesday, November 20 – Senior Steps (Swallow Screening) Health screenings are held in various locations throughout the hospital and include cognitive, voice, swallowing, hearing and balance screenings. Diabetes Educational Program for Adults This educational program for adults with diabetes is held periodically at Phelps. Learn what diabetes is, different medications available, how to prevent and manage complications, blood sugar targets, what foods to eat, how to count carbs and much more. Pre-registration and a physician referral are required. There may be a charge for this class, depending on insurance coverage. Please note that attendance at both classes is required. ABCs of Baby Care This class for expectant parents is to help you prepare for your new baby’s arrival. Topics covered included how to diaper and bathe a baby, equipment needed such as a car seat, crib safety, guidelines for safe sleep, newborn characteristics and appearance, general baby care and more. This class is offered once a month. Classes are held at 7 pm. Please see registration form for details. $50 per couple. Full refund for cancellations requested at least 1 week prior to the start of class; 50% refund after that date. Prenatal Breastfeeding Class This class for expectant parents offers information on how to initiate successful breastfeeding. Topics include milk supply and how milk is made, what to expect from your newborn, latch and positioning, how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk and more. Couples are encouraged to come together. Taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). $50 per couple. Full refund for cancellations requested at least 1 week prior to the start of class; 50% refund after that date. This class is offered Saturdays, 10 am – 2 pm once a month. The Childbirth Experience/ LaMaze Method This series of classes is designed to cover all aspects of the childbirth experience. We offer information on the following topics: pregnancy, labor, delivery, caesarean section, the newborn, and the techniques of Lamaze childbirth preparation – including exercise, relaxation, breathing, and pharmacologic pain management. Tour and childbirth films are included. Taught by Certified Childbirth Educators on the Phelps Birthing Center nursing staff. If you have already taken the course and wish to sign up for a Lamaze refresher course, call 914-366-3382 for scheduling information. $150 per couple. Classes are offered Wednesdays 7:30 pm-10 pm and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) 10 am-3 pm. Please see registration form for details. Totsaver Program This 3-hour class includes the pediatric component of the American Heart Association CPR for Family and Friends. Due to the physical demands of the class, pregnant women in their third trimester may wish to consult their physician for advice on participation.
