Healthy Life Series Continues in October at Phelps Hospital
Phelps Hospital offers wealth of health education programs during the month of October

Phelps Hospital’s Healthy Life series offers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for October follows:
Wednesday, October 3 - Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to help stimulate their minds and improve cognitive functioning (memory, visual recall, problem solving, focus and speed, and spatial reasoning) by playing group games. Thursday, October 4 - Surgical Innovations Panel Discussion Powerful Innovation, Compassionate care. Join us for an intimate panel discussion in the Phelps Auditorium with our experts on surgical innovation. The conversation will be moderated by local radio host, Mike Bennett of WHUD. Learn about the newest technology and techniques for minimally invasive procedures for treating hernias and cancer, preventative care for high risk patients, as well as non-opioid pain treatment options being used pre and post-surgery. Some topics to be discussed are technology and techniques, surgical care team and location and recovery. This is an open discussion and we invite you to come prepared with questions so our doctors and address any fears or concerns you may have surrounding surgery. Friday, October 5 - Tai Chi Classes (Eight-week Session) Tai Chi is a graceful form of exercise that reduces stress and improves a variety of health conditions through gentle, flowing movement. Tuesday, October 9 - Better Breather Club A free monthly interactive support group for people with breathing disorders or pulmonary fibrosis, sponsored by Phelps, the American Lung Association and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Each month’s meeting features a presentation on a pertinent topic. Participants who use oxygen may switch to the hospital’s supply during the meeting. Light refreshments are served. Thursday, October 11 - Osteoporosis Program A free monthly group program for individuals with osteoporosis, providing education on nutrition, exercise, medication and activities of daily living. The sessions are held from 10:45 am to 11:30 am the second Thursday of the month in the Phelps Boardroom (C Level). Closest parking is near the Auditorium entrance. Monday, October 15 - Pediatric Feeding Therapy: Picky Eater or Problem Feeder? An information session with Q&A for parents who have concerns regarding their infants or toddlers feeding skills. Tuesday, October 16 - Cancer Institute Community Day Full day of free support groups for cancer patients and their caretakers. Drop in for a specific event or enjoy the whole day! Events include, new patient orientation, chemotherapy review class, nutrition and the cancer patient, support session/special speakers. Light refreshments served. Third Tuesday of the month. Wednesday, October 17 - Look Good . . . Feel Better® is a free 2-hour workshop that teaches beauty techniques to women undergoing cancer treatment. The program includes a 12-step skincare and makeup lesson, anil care techniques, and professional advice on how to deal with hair loss using wigs, scarves, hats, hairpieces, and other accessories. Cancer Support Programs – Phelps Hospital offers a monthly series of cancer support programs for patients who will be receiving cancer treatment. Topics are New Patient Orientation; Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Treatment Orientation and Patient Family Cancer Support Group. Times and days vary, so please call for more information. Diabetes Educational Program for Adults This two-session educational program for adults with diabetes is held every month at Phelps (date and time may vary). Learn what diabetes is, different medications available, how to prevent and manage complications, blood sugar targets, what foods to eat, how to count carbs and much more. Pre-registration and a physician referral are required. There may be a charge for this class, depending on insurance coverage. Please note that attendance at both classes is required.
