(RYE BROOK, NY) – Nancy Barr, a Rye Brook resident, announced she is running for the Westchester County Legislature on the Democratic ticket. Ms. Barr, an attorney and former president of the Blind Brook School Board, filed for the 6th District County Legislative seat, currently held by Republican David Gelfarb.

“I am running because the people of Westchester deserve to be represented by someone who will stand up and fight for their values,” said Ms. Barr. “We can’t sit by and treat local politics as if it doesn’t matter. If we want strong and compassionate leadership at the top, we have to cultivate that at every level of government.”
She added, “Active leadership can make the difference in the lives of our residents, right here in District 6. A great example is the proposed privatization of the Westchester County Airport, which is not in the interests of our local communities. I don’t believe that residents want to sacrifice their safety, basic environmental protection and quality of life. I’m glad that my opponent has taken a stand against privatization, but question why he has refused to do so until now. His loyalty to Rob Astorino, our County Executive, has impaired his ability to take a leadership role on this issue. It is not enough that he will vote against this proposal; he must work to convince the other legislators why they should also vote against privatization. “
“My top priority is making County government work better for the families of Westchester County and our communities of Rye Brook, Port Chester and Harrison. It is important to me to represent the values of progress: fairness and equal rights for all; strength and kindness; and fiscal responsibility.”
Ms. Barr understands the importance of minimizing taxes while ensuring services meet the needs of all of Westchester’s residents. She has worked hard over the years to make this so -- just two examples are her work with unions during school budget negotiations, successfully ensuring historically low tax increases, and her equally successful efforts to save local taxpayers millions of dollars by working to keep Signature Flight on the tax rolls.
“Government should foster an environment where everyone has the opportunity to excel,” Ms. Barr said. “I will be transparent as I focus on strengthening educational institutions; implementing reasonable transportation policies; protecting parks and public spaces; and showing solidarity with all people across the district.”
Ms. Barr has lived in Rye Brook since 1996. During that time, she has actively served her community. She was a member of the Blind Brook School Board from 2009 to 2015. Ms. Barr coordinates monthly meals for the St. Peter’s Soup Kitchen, is the vice president and a board member for the Council of Community Services and is a volunteer for the Jacob Burns Film Center where she recently helped 4th Graders at the Thomas A. Edison School in Port Chester create animated movies.
She is a graduate of Colgate University and Yale Law School. She is married to Thomas Kratochvil, also a lawyer. Together they have two children, Zachary, a recent graduate of Dartmouth College, and Leah, a rising sophomore at Bowdoin College.
In addition to running on the Democratic Party Line, Ms. Barr has been endorsed by the Independence, Working Families and Women’s Equality Parties.
