Remembering The Fallen: Honoring Hudson Valley's 9/11 Victims

PORT CHESTER, NY — It's hard to believe it's the 18th anniversary of the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. People graduating from high school now learn about that day in school, only having heard about it.

That's why it's important to remember all of the people who died on that day. Nearly 3,000 people. Most but not all of them New Yorkers.

There were more than 200 Hudson Valley residents killed that day.

Not forgotten either are the first responders, many of them Hudson Valley residents who have died or are suffering from 9/11-related illnesses. There are 33,000 first responders on that second dreadful list, according to CBS New York. In all, 51,000 people applied to the victims compensation fund that makes payments to people with illnesses potentially related to 9/11.

Several local communities are including first responders who have died from 9/11-related illnesses in their memorials or annual ceremonies. For example, this year Putnam County is adding Det. Tommy Lyons NYPD, who died at 51, and Lieut. Thomas Roberts, FDNY, who was 58, to its memorial in Carmel.

The Rockland County memorial also includes victims with close local ties, such as those raised in the community. On the memorial in Haverstraw are also: Thomas J.
