What Are New York's Top Baby Names?

These are the official, registered names from the Social Security Administration. Did your baby's name make the list?

The numbers are in, the letters are arranged and the official list of the country’s most popular baby names of 2014 is out.

The Social Security Administration released the 2014 results on Friday. Again in 2014, Noah was the most popular name for boys in the country, but there was a change at the top for girls—Emma moved up from the No. 2 spot in 2013 to claim No. 1 in 2014.

In New York, parents didn’t always fall in line with the nation. Noah, for instance, came in as the No. 5 most popular name in NY, and Emma was No. 3 on the girls’ list.

Jacob and Sophia were at the top for new New Yorkers. And since Sofia came in at No. 10, that’s clearly a very popular name no matter how you spell it.

Lots of organizations release lists of top names, but the Social Security Administration data are based on ”a 100% sample of our records on Social Security card applications as of the end of February 2015.”
