8-12 Foot Waves Lash Long Island Coast
A high surf advisory is in effect as Hurricane Florence churns up seas from hundreds of miles away.

A high surf advisory will be in effect until 8 p.m. Friday on Long Island as Hurricane Florence churns up the ocean from hundreds of miles away.
Florence, a category 2 storm with winds of 100 mph as of 5 p.m. Thursday, is expected to make landfall Friday in the Carolinas where life-threatening storm surges and flash flooding is likely.
On Long Island, breaking waves of 8-12 feet overnight into Friday will result in widespread erosion at Atlantic-facing beaches and flooding with minor damage is possible to the base of dune structures, the National Weather Service says.

At this point, the probability for over-washes on the barrier islands is low. Brief and localized minor flooding is possible along the most vulnerable shoreline and barrier beach communities during times of high tide.
The remnants of Florence may track through the region next Tuesday into Wednesday and bring some wet weather to the island.

Unfortunately no reason to believe the catastrophic flooding forecasts won't pan out. Tonight's WRF echoes the official forecast...15-40" of rain for the largest rain event in North Carolina recorded history. #Florence pic.twitter.com/1UxmzHBFG6
