PORT JEFFERSON, NY — Port Jefferson School District officials have tapped Robert Neidig to fill the role of assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Neidig, who previously held the position of Port Jefferson Middle School principal for six years, was appointed at the July 1 board of education meeting.

School district officials described Neidig as a "veteran educator" who joined the school system in 2015 and "swiftly took on his new role” as the middle school principal, "becoming popular with administrators, faculty members, students, and families," in a news release.

Neidig's commitment to academics and leadership resulted in a realignment of the middle school’s mathematics curriculum, a coding program, a library makerspace, and a mindfulness program, according to school district officials.

Neidig worked closely with the Rotary Club of Port Jefferson to honor the Most Motivated Student in monthly awards presentations. He partnered with the Special Education Parent Teacher Association and successfully launched the Royal Gaming club with students.

Neidig has also taken on district-wide responsibilities including English as a New Language coordinator and the social and emotional reopening committee chairperson. He is also part of the professional development committee, the equity team, and the district safety team.

Neidig holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with a concentration in social studies from the University of Scranton, as well as master’s degrees in liberal studies and school district administration from Stony Brook University. He has an educational doctorate in educational administration from Dowling College.

Before joining the district, he was assistant principal of North Country Road Middle School in the Miller Place School District. He began his educational career as a secondary social studies teacher in the Babylon School District.

Schools Superintendent Jessica Schmettan said district officials are pleased to welcome Neidig to his new role.

“His current commitment to our school community is evident as we continue to provide a personalized, rigorous educational program," she said, adding that in his new position, Neidig "will continue to make the Port Jefferson School District an exceptional place to learn.”
