Hazardous Weather Outlook in Effect as Wind Chills Plunge to Zero

Get set for a frigid return to work as winter finally arrives in full force on Long Island.

The record-breaking warm temperatures of December will be a thing of the past early this week as an Arctic air blast makes its way to Long Island.

The National Weather Service on Monday issued the following hazardous weather outlook for Long Island:

“The combination of strong northerly winds and temperatures falling into the teens will result in wind chill values near zero late tonight into Tuesday morning.”

Daytime highs Monday will be in the low-30s with wind chill temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees. The temperature will fall into the low-teens Monday night with wind gusts nearing 30 mph.

You will need your full winter wardrobe for Tuesday morning. At 7 a.m., the temperature will be near 15 degrees and the wind chill will make it feel like zero.

“This air will be the coldest of the season thus far, which might not seem like much on paper, but it will deliver significantly low temperatures,” AccuWeather Chief Long Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok said.

The high Tuesday on Long Island will struggle to top 30 and the mercury will fall into the low-20s at night. Things will warm up a bit for the second half of the week with temperatures in the 40s Wednesday-Friday.

No precipitation or snow is forecast through at least Thursday for Long Island.

Here is the full forecast from the National Weather Service:

  • Today- Partly sunny, with a high near 33. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. North wind 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph.
  • Tonight- Mostly clear, with a low around 14. Wind chill values between zero and 10. North wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
  • Tuesday- Sunny, with a high near 31. Wind chill values between zero and 10. North wind 8 to 14 mph.
  • Tuesday Night- Clear, with a low around 20. Northwest wind 3 to 5 mph.
  • Wednesday- Sunny, with a high near 43. West wind 5 to 9 mph.
  • Wednesday Night- Clear, with a low around 29.
  • Thursday- Sunny, with a high near 43.
  • Thursday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 34.
  • Friday- Partly sunny, with a high near 45.
