Police ID Cemetery Worker Killed In Long Island Grave Collapse

A man was leveling out the bottom of a grave when the sides collapsed on him, police said. His co-workers tried digging him out.

MOUNT SINAI, NY — A cemetery employee was killed while digging a grave Thursday morning in Mount Sinai, Suffolk police said.

Rodwin Allicock, 42, of Coram, was leveling out the bottom of a grave at Washington Memorial Park at 855 Canal Road when the sides collapsed on him around 8:30 a.m., police said. His co-workers tried to dig him out of the grave, which was more than 7 feet deep, but they were unsuccessful, police said.

Allicock was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.

Suffolk County police emergency officers, Suffolk County fire rescue coordinators, Suffolk County Department of Public Works representatives and members of the Middle Island, Hagerman, Selden and Setauket fire departments all responded to the cemetery.
