Dangerous Long Island Beach Conditions Expected With Tropical Storm Offshore

A tropical storm will likely impact the Southeast this week. How close will the storm get to Long Island? We've got the latest forecast.

As Tropical Storm Harvey continues to lash Texas with catastrophic rainfall, the National Hurricane Center is also watching a system that is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm by Tuesday. That storm will likely impact the Carolinas Tuesday before taking a sharp northeast turn.

What does that mean for Long Island?

The storm is expected to pass well south of the region. The National Weather Service does say there's a 60 percent chance of showers Tuesday night. Wind gusts may reach 35 mph on the island.

There's only a 5 percent chance of the island seeing any tropical storm force winds (sustained winds of 39 mph or higher), the NHC says.

What the storm will do, however, is create some dangerous conditions on Long Island beaches. The NWS says there's a high risk of rip currents at ocean-facing beaches Monday with surf of 4-5 feet. Dangerous rip currents will remain likely through Wednesday.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore. The NWS advises swimmers to pay attention to flags and posted signs and to swim only in areas with lifeguards.
