Fundraiser for Long Island Mom Battling Rare Cancer

GoFundMe launched for East Setauket woman diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma.

The daughter of an East Setauket woman recently diagnosed with stage IV leiomyosarcoma, an extremely rare cancer, is launching a fundraiser campaign to support her mother and raise awareness of the disease.

“Imagine you won the lottery. Except, instead of getting 12 million dollars, you’re diagnosed with cancer. Not just any cancer, but a cancer SO rare that only 8% of all people are diagnosed,” the GoFundMe page reads.

A 5K road race is being planned for the spring to bring attention to leiomyosarcoma — a type of cancer that has no national campaigns or months in its name. All profits from the race will support the National Leiomyosarcoma Foundation. The GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for the foundation and ensure the success of the upcoming 5K event.
