Good Deeds Commemorate 9/11 Heroes in Port Jefferson

As part of a Good Deed Project, Port Jefferson Middle School students pledged to do something good in honor of all the kind acts done by so many following the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Through the project, which was designed by the English department, students pledged to do a good deed by writing it on a small paper square. The squares were then stitched together to form a quilt, which is now on display in the school’s hallway.

Before the students decided on their pledge, teachers discussed the immense impact that good deeds have and how they can brighten someone else’s day.

According to English teacher Deirdre Filippi, the project was modeled after the nationally acclaimed “I Will” campaign, through which people can make pledges on the website www.911day.org.

Here are some of the deeds students pledged to do:

“Teach my little brother to read.”

“Give my parents a hug and tell them I love them.”

“Show I care by helping a friend in need.”

“Volunteer in the community and say thank you to a police officer or fireman.”

“Do more chores and donate money to veterans.”

“Put together a basket for the soldiers.”

“Plan a food drive.”

“Think of other people’s needs.”

“Be kind to others and spread positivity.”

“Participate in community service.”

“Donate to charity and respect military members.”
