PORT JEFFERSON, NY — A 14-year-old girl was rescued from an old bank vault that had been converted into a dressing room at a Long Island clothing store on Tuesday, Suffolk County police said.

The girl became locked inside of a dressing room at Kate & Hale in Port Jefferson at about 1 p.m., police said. In a post on the Port Jefferson Fire Department’s Facebook page, a spokesperson said the girl “had been accidentally locked in a dressing room area that once served as a bank vault.”

Someone who was inside the shop at the time told Patch that the girl's brother only closed the door behind her and it was stuck, not locked.

Fire crews had to use air chisels and hammer drills to “breach the 12-inch thick wall,” according to the fire department’s post.

“Once the hole was large enough, the girl was able to be assisted out,” the post read above a video highlighting the moment the girl was freed from the old vault.

Once the girl was free, the room erupted with applause, and shouts of “Yay!"

The girl was not injured during the ordeal, police said.

Altogether, four agencies responded including, the police, the Port Jefferson and Terryville fire departments, and the Port Jefferson Emergency Medical Services.
