Good Samaritans, Police Rescue LI Man, 70, From ‘Near Drowning’

PORT JEFFERSON, NY — A group of good Samaritans came to the rescue of a 70–year-old Coram man who nearly drowned off of Port Jefferson on Sunday afternoon, Suffolk police said.

Police said that Alan Goldberg was attempting to anchor a boat on Whitehall Beach when he lost his footing and lost consciousness in the water at about 2:30 p.m. Police said that “multiple good Samaritans” helped Goldberg on the beach, but Francis George and Karl George, a son and father who were nearby, were able to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation while the Marine Bureau was en-route, police said.

When officers Cory Kim and Shane Parker arrived, they transferred Goldberg onto a rescue boat, said police, adding that the four continued CPR as Goldberg was brought to the boat ramp in Port Jefferson. Once on shore, Goldberg was taken by an ambulance that had been waiting to take him to St. Charles Hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries, police said.

Francis George, 30, and Karl George, 65, both of East Setauket, were not injured during the rescue efforts, police said.
