Port Jeff Sommerstad Sisters Recognized For Swimming Achievements

The two sisters recently competed in the State Championship.

Two sisters in the Port Jefferson School District were recently recognized for their accomplishments at the New York State Swim Championships.

The Port Jefferson School District recognized Kyra and Kate Sommerstad for their achievements. Kyra, a junior, won the the 200-individual medley and placed 2nd in the 100-backstroke at the 2018 state championship. She was also named a 2017-18 Scholastic All-America team member, a competitive accomplishment with high academic requirements to swim at the national level.

Kyra began swimming at the high school level in 8th grade and is a seven-time Suffolk County champion who has qualified at the state level four times.

Kate, a freshman, competed in the State Championship for the first time this year, and placed 2nd in the 500-freestyle and 7th in the 100-backstroke at the 2018 Suffolk County Championships, which qualified her for the state level. There, she qualified for the 500-freestyle and made it to the finals and placed 21st in the 100-backstroke.

In addition to their commitment to academics, the sisters are independent swimmers for Port Jefferson who both have been swimming competitively for seven years with the Three Village Swim Club.
