1,500 Lose Power As Halloween Wind Whips Port Washington

BREAKING: Powerful wind gusts toppled tree branches, causing a massive power outage in Port Washington.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — An eerie atmosphere overtook one Port Washington village on Halloween, and it had nothing to do with trick-or-treaters, jack-o-lanterns or haunted houses. A powerful storm packing winds of up to 29 mph whipped Manorhaven on Thursday night, knocking out power to nearly 1,500 people around 6:45 p.m.

As the last vestiges of trick-or-treaters knocked on doors, homes that were once elaborately decorated with lights, lanterns and spooky skeletons were plunged into darkness, effectively shortening the evening for many youngsters.

As PSEG Long Island crews worked along Manorhaven Boulevard, the lights returned for hundreds, though around 9:20 p.m., more than 1,100 Manorhaven homes and businesses remained in the dark. Around 10 p.m., PSEG reported nearly all power had been restored.
