PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Two Port Washington school buildings will close Tuesday after two students tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

In a letter to the community, superintendent Michael Hynes said the district was informed Monday that a student at Paul D. Schreiber High School and another at John J. Daly Elementary School tested positive. In accordance with the district's reopening plan, the Nassau County Department of Health was immediately contacted to begin contact tracing.

"We are following all building sanitizing and cleaning protocols, and out of an abundance of caution, the Schreiber and Daly buildings will be closed Tuesday, September 15," Hynes said.

Students and staff were asked to follow a full remote day of instruction.

"Please continue to monitor your child(ren) closely for any sign of potential illness and complete the District’s Student Health Screening each morning prior to the start of school," Hynes said.

The Port Washington positive tests follow positives seen in Seaford, Syosset, Oyster Bay and New Hyde Park school districts, among others.
