Another Port Washington School Closes Due To Coronavirus Case
A fourth case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, has been found in Port Washington. The building was forced to close.
PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Another Port Washington student has tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and the school building will close Tuesday, officials said.
A student at Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School tested positive for the disease, Michael Hynes, superintendent for the Port Washington Union Free School District, told the school community in a letter Monday. The Nassau County Department of Health was contacted to begin contact tracing steps under the district's reopening plan, he said.
"We are following all building sanitizing and cleaning protocols, and out of an abundance of caution, the Weber building will be closed tomorrow, September 22," Hynes said.

Students and staff will follow a full virtual day of learning, he said.
The Weber case represents the district's fourth positive coronavirus test and comes just a day before the two-week mark for the school year, an early indicator of the challenge school officials face in reopening.

Two students tested positive for COVID-19 last week, forcing Paul D. Schreiber High School and John J. Daly Elementary School to close for a day. Each were cleaned and reopened Wednesday. Hynes said a second student at Daly also tested positive for COVID-19, but that student wasn't physically in school for the last week and the school was not forced to stay closed.
The latest closure also comes just days eight days before Port Washington elementary schools are to return to a five-day in-person schedule.
