Cooling Centers Open In North Hempstead As Heat And Humidity Rise

Multiple cooling centers will be open to residents looking to escape the extreme summer heat. Here's where they are located.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — A number of cooling centers will be open in North Hempstead for those looking to escape the extreme summer heat, according to town officials.

The cooling sites will be open on Tuesday, June 29, through Thursday, July 1 — and will offer residents air conditioning, cold water, and a place to relax while they avoid temperatures in the 90s. Masks will be required indoors.

  • "Yes We Can" Community Center (141 Garden St., Westbury) — 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Michael J. Tully Park (1801 Evergreen Ave., New Hyde Park) — 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Port Washington Senior Center (80 Manorhaven Blvd., Port Washington) — Tuesday from 12 to 8 p.m., Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Thursday from 12 to 8 p.m.

Heat Advisory In Effect + Your Local Forecast

A heat advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday for much of the Tri-State area, including both Nassau and Suffolk counties in New York.

According to the National Weather Service, a heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

Forecasters say there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, with a high near 94 degrees. The heat index — or the "feels-like" temperature — will be around 101 degrees. Temperatures will drop to a low of 75 degrees Tuesday night.

Tips To Stay Cool This Summer

During periods of extreme heat, the Town of North Hempstead recommends that residents:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing that is both loose and absorbent (cotton is a good choice)
  • Eat fruits and vegetables
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat when venturing outdoors
  • Take cool baths/showers once or twice a day
  • Limit their intake of caffeine and alcoholic beverages
  • Check the daily heat index to alert them to the risk of heat-related illness
