Summer Discovery Acquires Summer Institute For The Gifted

ROSLYN, NY —The Roslyn-based educational program provider Summer Discovery recently acquired the Summer Institute for the Gifted with plans to expand its programs from middle and high school-aged students to include children five years old and up, according to a news release.

The organization’s programs have been traditionally geared toward middle and high school students, but joining with the Connecticut-based Summer Institute will allow it to “expand offerings and university partnerships to support the academic needs and growth of elementary school students,” officials stated in the news release.

Summer Discovery declined to say how much the company was acquired for through a public relations representative.

Summer Discovery offers pre-college preparatory programs in areas such as medicine, business, law and government, as well as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, according to its website. It partners with universities to run programs at UCLA, Michigan, Georgetown, and Pennsylvania universities, as well as the U.K. and Sinagpore, but it will have access to an additional 20 locations nationwide with the Summer Institute onboard, officials said.

The companies are planning on-campus and online programs for summer 2021.

The 55-year-old organization’s goal has been “helping students achieve their academic potential and the acquisition allows it to serve a whole new demographic of students who are gifted, academically talented, and creative students looking to connect and grow with like-minded peers and a supportive community,” said Adriane Thorpe, chief executive officer for Summer Discovery.

Caroline Daniel, director of academics for the Summer Institute, said the acquisition brings two “powerhouse brands in the educational space under one roof. “It means families have more options, and both companies can share opportunities to build quality gifted and pre-college programs in the market for the students we serve,” she said.

Since its formation in 1984, the Summer Institute has expanded to include eight residential sessions in six states, including overnight and day options for students nine to 17 years old, as well as an 11 additional day-only programs for commuting students from 5 to 12 years old, officials said.
