Donations Sought For Port Washington Christmas Tree Lighting
Organizers of Port Washington's annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony say they need new decorations.
PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Organizers of Port Washington's annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony seek donations for new decorations as the event goes virtual this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In a crowdfunding campaign created Nov. 17 through GoFundMe, organizers said the tree at Blumenfeld Family Park grew. They believe they now need new ornaments and lights.
"The committee is run entirely on the work of volunteers, and the donations from local businesses and individuals. During the event we generally accept donations to help us keep the Christmas Tree going year after year," organizers said in a statement to Patch on Tuesday.

Donations go toward ornaments, lights, refreshments, costumes and equipment. This year, the committee set up a GoFundMe page that will remain active until Friday.
"Let's keep our Magnificent Christmas Tree glowing with lights and ornaments and keep the 'Miracle of Christmas' alive in Port Washington," the GoFundMe post said.

The tree-lighting ceremony, held for more than 20 years, was previously scheduled for late November. It was pushed back to Sunday.
Additionally, organizers said they need a new creche/manger for the annual live Nativity performance, where adults and children come together to recreate the scene of Jesus' birth. That performance will return next year.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the campaign had received $380 in donations.
