A Focus on Literacy in Port Washington

Sousa's Parents as Reading Partners program encourages student reading.

Sousa Elementary School’s Literacy Committee recently hosted its Parents as Reading Partners week. The program encourages student reading and impresses upon students that reading can be fun and informative.

As part of the program, storyteller Jonathan Kruk visited the school and held several storytelling assemblies. His K-2 assembly centered on fables and fairytales, and his grades 3-5 assembly focused on kind tales around the world. An evening family performance was also held.

The assemblies focused on the purpose and importance of storytelling, why it can be fun and how storytelling emphasizes kindness, compassion and confidence.
