HICKSVILLE, NY—The William M. Grouse Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3211 in Hicksville has named three Hicksville Middle School students winners in its annual Patriot Pen contest.

Seventh grader Najwa Sahar was selected as the first place winner, with eighth grader Lina Rguigue and seventh grader Talib Shah taking second and third place, respectively. The students were guided in the process by teachers Joseph Hartig and Kevin Boyle.

As part of the contest, which is designed to foster patriotism by allowing students the opportunity to express their opinions, the students wrote essays under the theme, “What is patriotism to me?” The essays were then read by members of the VFW Post who selected the essays based on their content.
