History of Food: Virtual Butter Making and Quick Pickles Class

Free program presented by the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society

The Cow Neck Peninsula Historical society is pleased to invite you to a free, virtual Butter Making and Quick Pickles class. The one-hour class will take place on Thursday, November 5 at 8 pm. You will learn about how butter was originally made, and how that became industrialized. (Did you know that New York was where that happened?)

Our teacher for the evening will be Jessica Affatato, cheese monger and proprietor of Harbor Cheese and Provisions. Jessica will teach us how foods were preserved prior to the age of refrigeration, and what the difference is between refrigerator pickles and fermented pickles. During the class, we will make homemade butter and quick red onion pickles.

The class will include hands on demonstrations, and you will be provided with the recipes and ingredient list in advance so you can try it along with us at home. Registration is simple and super easy! Simply email reservations@cowneck.org and you will be sent the link to the zoom meeting and a list of recipes and ingredients. For more info about the program, visit our website!

The mission of the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society is to engage people of all ages in programs that highlight the lifestyles of the people and families that lived and worked on the peninsula throughout the years. Central to this mission is the preservation of the Sands Willets House (circa 1735) and the Thomas Dodge Homestead (circa 1721), which the Society operates as house-museums, serving as resources for the community.
