LONG ISLAND, NY — Meteorologists urged caution while traveling Tuesday afternoon and evening as light snow mixed with sleet could form ice on roadways and sidewalks, according to a special weather statement issued by the National Weather Service for the northern half of Long Island.
"Light snow and sleet will likely mix with or transition to freezing drizzle through 4 p.m.," the weather service said. "This icy wintry mix is likely to continue into the evening commute, particularly away from the coast."
A trace to a few hundredths of an inch of ice accretion is possible on untreated and elevated surfaces, making for locally dangerous travel. Use extra caution if traveling into evening.
